  1. What is the Drug Quiz Show?

    A fun way to learn a bunch of interesting things that will definitely come in handy in the future.

  2. Is it fun?

    Absolutely!!!

  3. How old do I have to be to participate?

    10 to 14 years old, in grades 5 through 8

  4. What can I win?

    A variety of things ranging from water bottles, T-shirts, and stuffed animals to trophies, limo rides, and drug-free “nights on the town!” But the best prize of all is the confidence you’ll gain and the knowledge you’ll have and be able to share with family and friends.

  5. How many people are on a team?

    Each team consists of 4 members, with up to 3 alternates.

  6. How do you get on a team?

    Each school does it a little differently.

    Some schools make Drug Quiz available to only certain classes or grade levels.

    Some schools administer a test to figure out how much youngsters know.

    Some schools encourage everyone who is interested to sign up.

    To find out how Drug Quiz works in your school, check with your School Advisor.

  7. How do you play?

    First you sign up to be on a team.

    Then you study the materials provided.

    1st Round questions are answered cooperatively by the whole team.

    2nd Round questions are answered individually. First section are all True - False. Second section are all Multiple Choice.

    3rd Round questions are also answered individually. The first person to push the button on the game show buzzer and light system gets the first chance to answer the question.

  8. How many points do you need to win?

    Usually one, but for the Semi-Final and Final Championship games you need to win by two points.

  9. How long does a typical game take?

    About 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how many Tiebreaker questions need to be asked.

  10. What do I need to study?

    The Drug Quiz Show will give you everything you need.

    The basic materials consist of 15 colorful, student friendly Learning Centers covering the following topics:

    Alcohol
    Conflict Resolution
    Decision-Making
    Depressants
    Feelings
    General Information About Drugs
    Grief
    Hallucinogens
    Marijuana
    Self-Esteem
    Steroids
    Stimulants
    Stress
    Success
    Tobacco

    You also will get a more comprehensive packet of brochures to study should you move on to regional and/or state level competitions.

  11. How do you suggest I go about studying?

    Check out the Introduction section of the Learning Centers to find a list of fun ways to study the 15 Learning Center topics.

    Try your hand at some of the review activities on the web site.

    Look over the Study Tips page when you’re ready to tackle the additional study packet full of brochures.

  12. How many games do we play?

    That depends on how far you get in the competition.

    Everyone starts with a local school or community organization (Boys and Girls Club, for example) competition.

    If, for example, there are several middle schools (or Boys and Girls Clubs) in your area, they might arrange for the winners to play off against each other.

    School and community group winners then participate in regional competitions.

    Regional winners come to Syracuse to participate in the New York State Regional Play-offs. This competition is held during the day.

    The top four teams return about 4-6 weeks later for the State Finals. These Championship Rounds take place in the evening and are televised.

  13. How much free time does this take?

    That depends on how much time you wish to dedicate.

    Just like with learning anything new, however, the more you practice, the better you get.

  14. Does it cost any money?

    No, participation in the Drug Quiz Show is free.

    In fact, all of the materials necessary are given to interested schools and organizations at no charge.

  15. Where do we play?

    That depends on who’s sponsoring the competition.

    If it’s a school or Boys and Girls Club, your first games will probably be held in a school or at a Boys and Girls Club.

    If you move on to the regional or state levels, it depends where organizers decide to hold the competitions that year.

    The actual places change from year to year.

  16. When do we compete?

    Usually during the fall, winter, and early spring.

    The New York State Finals are typically held in May or June.

  17. Do we get out of school when we play?

    Possibly, especially if your area holds Regional Competitions during the day. For sure, if you get to the State level, as the first of these competitions is held during the day.

  18. Who is the Coach?

    Any interested adult can become an Advisor.

    Advisors can be teachers, parents, or other community members.

  19. Can kids become Coaches?

    Former participants or other teens in 9th grade or higher can become Peer Coaches. Peer Coaches have fun studying with teams and cheering them on to victory!

  20. Why should I participate?

    To have fun.

    To learn interesting, useful stuff.

    To make friends and be part of a team.

    To feel special.

    To make your family proud.

    To make yourself proud.
